Field trips

在Lesvos的課程，有很大一部分是實地考察的校外教學，基本上就是要從能源、水資源、農業、廢棄物處理以及生物多樣五個層面來了解整個島的生態系。

上禮拜的實地考察，我們從首都 Mytilene 一路開經過 Gulf of Gera，到島的中部 Kalloni 再到島的西部 Andissa，看了侯鳥紅鶴和島上山頂的風電廠。Lesvos 是著名的賞鳥之地，島上絕大多數的自然保護區，都是為候鳥而設。學校的教授們都博學多聞，對這個島上他們的專業領域瞭若指掌，但是真是太熱了，熱到無法專注而動來動去。成就環境專業，良好的體力和健康果然很重要，要上山下海，要充滿熱忱阿! 之前在布達佩斯，每天都坐在教室裡不然就是電腦前，到這裡來能跑來跑去 (當然每天也要去海邊游泳)，真是太棒了。

釀製Ouzo

第二次的實地考察，去了島上唯一的發電廠和 Lesvos 世界有名的烈酒 Ouzo 酒廠 (上面這個流阿流的就是八十趴還沒經過加工的純 Ouzo，喝了要送醫院的)。Ouzo 的原料是歐亞甘草 (licorice)，這東西的味道就和八角一模模一樣樣，喝四十趴的Ouzo，就像喝了高度濃縮的八角酒 (我自己瞎猜形容的，那味道聞起來真是太難聞了，我當然試都沒試)，西方人好像特別尬意寄密阿!

我到了Lesvos第二的禮拜，才發現形容女同志「蕾絲邊」這個詞，就是從Lesbian (Lesvos人) 來的阿， 原來我現在住在這麼具有意義的地方! 緣由是Lesvos為西元前六世紀有名的希臘女詩人莎浮(Sappho)的誕生之地，莎浮留下來的詩作描述了女性的美麗、女性之間的關係和儀式，特別是她對女性的愛，於是後代有人推測她可能是女同性戀者，而她出生的小鎮現在也成為全世界女同志的朝聖和聚集之地，Lesbian 這個字後來就逐漸由 「Lesvos人」這個意思，轉變為形容女性間的情感關係。當然你現在還是可以用Lesbian這個字來指稱 「Lesvos人」或 「Lesvos的」，不過我想不懂得其中來由的人，大概會一頭霧水，就像我一開始一樣，哈哈。

結束了在布達佩斯九個月的苦讀後，我們全班人馬終於來到希臘，要修完這學期(暑假前)的最後八學分，生態系管理和永續旅遊兩門課。

愛琴大學校區據說遍部希臘二十幾個島。環境、地理，海洋生態和視覺藝術學系的校區就位在希臘東邊，靠近土耳其的第三大島 Lesvos的首都 Mytilene。從雅典搭渡輪過來要十三個小時。

Lesvos不是一個很觀光的小島，來到這邊已經一個禮拜，風景和人情，好的沒話說，跟布達佩斯真是天壤之別。這裡的人，有台灣的親切，當地人看到外國人，都微笑打招呼。問路講不通，也是直接把妳帶到目的地，隔壁店的老闆不在，鄰居就幫妳打電話去把老闆找回來。

我們住的小旅館，坐落在Miylene Castle的旁邊，走個十幾分鐘，就可以到幾個不同的海灘。尤其是在城堡旁邊那個海灘，每次走過去，都要穿過城堡廢墟，隨處長滿紅色和黃色的小花，另一邊是深藍藍藍的大海.....

和教授們一起去在港口的Bar看歐洲冠軍杯冠亞軍賽時，教授還不忘提醒我們：「玩樂和讀書要兼顧阿！」(我們：ㄏㄤˊ，有這回事嗎??? 教授你在說甚麼呢 )

Imagine you're in an enormous room, and it's as dark as a cave.

And you can have anything in that room, anything you want, but you can't see anything.

You've been given one tool, a hammer.

So you wander around in the darkness, and you bump into something, and it feels like it's made of stone.

It's big, it's heavy. You can't carry it away.

So you bang it with your hammer, and you break off a piece.

And you take the piece out into the daylight.

You see you have a beautiful piece of white alabaster.

So you say to youself, "Well, that's worth something."

You go back into the room, and you break this thing to pieces, and you haul it away.

You're getting all kinds of cool stuff.

You gear other people doing the same thing.

So you get this sense of urgency,

like you need to find as much stuff as soon as possible.

And then somebody yells, "Stop!"

They turn up the lights.

You realize where you are; 

You are in the Louvre.

You've taken all this complexity and beauty,

and you turned into a cheap commodity.

That's what we're doing with the ocean.

And part of what Mission Blue is about 

is yelling,

"Stop!"

so that each of us--explorer, scientist, cartoonist, singer. chef--

can turn up the lights in their own way.
